Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose lung and mediastinal (chest) conditions, including lung cancer, infections, and other diseases. During EBUS-TBNA, a flexible bronchoscope equipped with an ultrasound probe is inserted through the mouth into the trachea and bronchi. This allows doctors to visualize the structures and lymph nodes within and around the airways in real-time. Using the ultrasound for guidance, a fine needle is then inserted through the bronchial wall to collect tissue samples from targeted lymph nodes or masses. This procedure is typically performed under sedation or anesthesia and provides a safer alternative to more invasive surgical biopsies. EBUS-TBNA is highly accurate and crucial for early and precise diagnosis, facilitating effective treatment planning while minimizing patient discomfort and recovery time.
