NTRK (Neurotrophic Tyrosine Receptor Kinase) genes encode for a family of proteins known as Trk receptors, which are involved in the development and function of the nervous system. Fusions of NTRK genes, where part of the NTRK gene merges with another gene, can lead to the production of abnormal proteins that drive cancer growth. These gene fusions are found in various types of cancers, including certain rare pediatric cancers and some common adult tumours. Identifying NTRK gene fusions in tumours is crucial because cancers with these alterations often respond well to targeted therapies known as TRK inhibitors. These drugs specifically block the abnormal Trk proteins, leading to significant tumour shrinkage. Testing for NTRK fusions enables personalized treatment strategies, offering hope for effective management of NTRK fusion-positive cancers.
