Healthcare System

In Latvia, the Nacionālais Veselības Dienests (NVD) is the provider of universal healthcare with the exception of dental care and most rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The system is financed through general taxation, and is managed by the Ministry of Health, who also manages the national health policy and the overall organization and functioning of the health system. The NVD is primarily responsible for implementing state health policies, purchasing publicly funded health services and ensuring healthcare service availability.

The NVD and Slimību Profilakses un Kontroles Centrs (SPKC) are the main organizations responsible for national health information systems and databases such as electronic health records, claims data, cause of death, and cancer registries.
