Type of database: survey

Primary purpose: To investigate and map eating habits for predicting incident cancer cases in the population and to assess cardiovascular risk factors and early atherosclerosis in a small sample.

Sponsor, manager or home institution: Lund University.

Type of information: longitudinal. A questionnaire was used to gather information about lifestyle, socio-economic factors, medications, dietary habits, and past illnesses. Body measurements were taken, including height, weight, hip and waist circumference, and body fat percentage. Blood samples were collected both with and without fasting. Additionally, the study included an examination of the carotid artery (thickness of the neck vessels), bone density measurements, and factors related to chronic pain and work conditions. After 5 years, participants underwent a follow-up examination. This included another questionnaire, measurements of body constitution, blood pressure, a glucose tolerance test (OGTT), an ultrasound of the carotid arteries, an assessment of arterial stiffness, and additional blood samples. Other variables include age, sex, marital status, place of residence, education, employment status, income, alcohol consumption, smoking habit, self-perceived health, self-reported prevalence of chronic diseases, comorbidities, medical procedures, check-up examinations, medication use, quality of life, year. The variables list is available in the associated documentation of this website: click here to learn more.

Data Dictionary: Malmö Diet Cancer (Sweden)

Source of information: Malmö residents were invited from 1991 to 1996 to participate in the study.

Data level: respondent level.

Number of records: 28098 respondents.

Date range: 1991 - 2012.

Cancer areas of interest: C00-D48: All neoplasms. Click here to learn more.
