Chemoembolization
Chemoembolization is a specialized cancer treatment, particularly effective for liver tumours, that combines targeted chemotherapy with embolization to block the tumour's blood supply. During the procedure, chemotherapy drugs are directly delivered to the tumour through a catheter, followed by the injection of tiny particles that obstruct the blood vessels feeding the tumour. This dual approach not only delivers high concentrations of chemotherapy directly to the tumour but also cuts off its oxygen and nutrient supply, enhancing the treatment's effectiveness. Performed by interventional radiologists, chemoembolization is minimally invasive and allows for concentrated treatment with fewer systemic side effects. It provides a powerful option for managing liver cancers, aiming to shrink tumours, alleviate symptoms, and improve overall survival rates.
