Sentinel node scintigraphy

From Beacon

Sentinel node scintigraphy is a specialized imaging procedure used to identify the sentinel lymph node, the first node to which cancer cells are likely to spread from a primary tumour. During the procedure, a small amount of radioactive tracer is injected near the tumour site. This tracer travels to the sentinel node, which can then be detected using a gamma camera. The accurate identification of the sentinel node helps doctors determine the extent of cancer spread and decide whether further lymph node removal or additional treatments are necessary. This minimally invasive technique is crucial in staging cancers like breast cancer and melanoma, aiding in the development of precise and personalized treatment plans while minimizing unnecessary surgery.
